Numbers and algebra are important constituents of math. The arithmetic operations enable one to perform any mathematical calculations whereas the incorporation of  variables and abstract numerical concepts in algebra enable the understanding of any future, higher level of math.

 

A strong foundation in numbers and algebra is necessary for the IB program. The knowledge of numbers, working with them, performing different operations, rounding, estimating, determining the bounds, and so on are required in every subsequent topic. Any misunderstanding in the basic foundation will affect the later concepts and expected answers. Concepts related to loans, annuities and so help in understanding real world scenarios. On the other hand, calculus calculations are more seamless when learners have a strong algebraic foundation. Additionally, algebra enables a learner to view math in a more abstract format leading to higher levels of understanding.
